MGM's Construction Site in Macau employs illegal workers
51 Hong Kong People under investigation

Under the keen competition of the gaming industry in Macau, the MGM Grand Paradise which is still under construction is expected to open this December. However, a number of illegal workers were found during police site inspection yesterday. 70 people were arrested in 51 were from Hong Kong, and the rest are from the Mainland and Japan

Located at Macau, the MGM Grand Paradise, a luxury resort hotel in Macau, is a joint venture between Pansy Ho and the MGM in US with an investment over US$0.9 billions, nearly HK$70 billions.

The construction site was inspected by 70 officials of Security Police of Macau SAR at 9:00am. Over 900 workers were checked within four and a half hours and more than 70 people are suspected of being illegal worker, including 51 from Hong Kong, 21 from the Mainland and one from Japan.

Until now, the police confirmed that 21 Mainlanders are illegal workers who have been buckled by plastic cable and several contractors are also being investigated. The police are still contacting the person-in-charge of this project. The Hong Kong people and the Japanese, who are under further investigation to check if they have legal working permit.

Mr. Kwok Shui-ling, spokesperson of the Security Police said, they cannot confirm at the present stage if there is an increase in the number of illegal workers from Hong Kong. Once visitor was discovered to work under traveler status, the Police will handle it immediately accordingly to the law.
